If anyone was to ask me what I thought of equality, I would say ‘Here here’! In theory it’s a utopian view which is dreamy and wishful but has nothing to do with evolution or the survival of the fittest?

Last week we saw yet another opulent ceremony by way of the Golden Globes film festival. Quiet murmurs across international newspapers reported once again, about the lack of diversity. Shock horror! Not enough women nominated? The LGBT community was recognised?…But not enough blacks credited for good work? As a woman of colour I felt prompted to feel aggrieved, that culturally I wasn’t being represented but I didn’t. In fact I just felt disengaged and board of the rhetoric. ??‍♀️

I remember when I first moved to a small village called Alresford, deep in the heart of Essex. It was the mid 80s and everyone had birthday parties which involved coming into school and gaily handing out invitations, like some kind of popularity lottery. I almost never got an invite. After a while I got over it and moved on. By the time I got to secondary school, I was ‘Head Girl’, little miss popular and could command my own social circle.

While I’m sure that there were talented artist, actors and directors who were due their recognition at last weeks Golden Globe awards; I somehow feel that the moment one starts shouting about disparity and unfairness, is the moment one places themselves in a subservient position. No one needs validation from those who don’t rate them. So should you seek it?

For those lamenting about unfairness and lack of representation, maybe it’s time to ignore the invite and have their own party? For those who chanted about ‘Black lives mattering’ maybe it’s time to stop marching to the sound of a hollow drum.

While I know that the struggle is real, (I am black and I have my struggles) I think we can only experience cultural progression if we stop trying to ingratiate ourselves amongst those who only seek to uphold the status quo?

Lets be clear, a win for anyone’s culture is a win for their legacy and is of significant historically relevant. However, I somehow think that the more one seeks to complain without striving to make a change, the more one chooses to be compliant.

Amongst all this who-ha, it’s worth noting that Awkwafina made history as the first Asian American to win a Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy for her role staring role in Farewell (she’s ethnic and a woman?); And Bong Joon-ho’s dark and intricate thriller Parasite won best foreign language film; the first Korean accolade in the Globes 77 year history.

So let’s clear this up, for those not invited to the party? Start your own Golden Globe ceremony and maybe when it becomes as popular as the old guard ceremony, then women, blacks and any other group that wasn’t represented can change the World on their own terms?…

….And they all lived happily ever after.
